apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#12 Edward's Small But Tall Home Office

Name: Edward
Location: San Francisco, CA
A/V or Home Office: Home Office

Favorite Source: Container Store (Elfa Systems)

What inspired you? The elegant and sexy design of the Apple Imac inspired me. Since the computer is very compact-all-in-one, I wanted to produce a minimal and clean work surface. I only had a small space to work with (4X6 feet) in the bedroom, so I decided to use the Elfa system to create shelving on top and a computer work desk on bottom.

... The Elfa system is easily adaptive and economical. I could custom size the computer shelf and elevate it to hide the keyboard underneath. The work area feels brighter and less cramped as it overlooks the entryway. As a lighting aficionado, I wanted various lighting options: overhead lighting on dimmers, desktop lighting and under the desk lighting.

Great Tip: Find out what is behind the walls before you do any drilling! I found out the wall covered up pipes, and I needed to be very careful where I drilled.

Yes it's handsome but other than having a nice chair, nice shelves, and a nice lamp there's nothing particularly small or cool about this setup...

It is essentially a mac on a desk. woo-hoo.

How about some info on the home network, how it integrates with the media center, or how the house can be controled from a PDA... No...then it's not cool.

Although there's nothing over the top tech-wise shown here, I think the space is great! Its compact, well organized, and high style. Frankly, apartment therapy is more about the visual aesthetic than the technological features.
That said, are there any special features behind the scenes?

Thank you Derek. I would have to agree that I didn't come to apartment therapy/hometech to read another gizmodo.com. I was excited to see a blog that focused the integration of small homes / apartments / style / AND electronics.

Any person can have the latest gadgets and a completely automated home with remote controlled blinds - but it can also look like a non swank bachelor pad for a tech geek.

I say kudos to Edward for integrating clean storage, efficient and stylish lighting, modern finishes, and a pleasing color palate all under a reasonable budget. It sure is smallest and aesthetically coolest and completely deserves a spot here on apartment therapy.

Awesome job Edward!

I have the same Elfa, and I love the way the Tolomeo lamps are used in this setup.

Love it! Very stylish and expensive looking-I thought those were Atlas shelves. Well done.

I agree whole-heartedly with Chad and Derek. I love this space because it is clean, stylish, and well-designed. Its all about making technology work in the space you have to fit your own needs.
Great job Edward!

Cool space, but I'm expecting more of a combination of Cool AND Tech for a finalist.

It seems like the entrants in this competition have either been heavy on the cool, but lacking tech (like this one) or heavy on the tech, but lacking cool. It will be interesting to see if anybody can strike a balance between the two.

Maybe cool and tech are mutually exclusive?

Thanks for all the comments. I hesitated to enter the contest, because I agree that I'm not the most high-tech person in the world. But I love design, and I really had fun integrating the Imac into my small bedroom office.

I'm also with phaedrus, hoping to see another entry that really balances high tech with good design (especially in home office contestants-it's not easy!)

Oke, so it's not the most high tech setup, it looks stylish with Eames-chair. Love the look, I would ahng the mac to the wall and work with a wireless keyboard mouse. It creates a cleaner look. The wire to the iPod dock could be under the shelve (just drill a little holl in it via which it comes up)

Love the lines, clean and simple but great quality.

Thanks Alex. I thought of the wirless keyboard and mouse, but these came with the imac, and I didn't see the need to purchase two more expensive items for the pure aesthetic (though cool). I've never seen an imac hung on the wall.

This is very inspiring to someone with a small office. Very well done, well organized and well lit on a reasonable design budget.
