Green Tip: Recycle your CDs

2007-07-12lostcds.jpg

Where do old CDs go to die? For most of us, they clutter notebooks, desktops, and occasionally they are destroyed and thrown in the trash. EcoGeek answers the question, is it possible to recycle old CDs or DVDs?

As Eco-Geek suggests, you should destroy anything that contains data you wouldn't want anyone else seeing (or using.) But if you're not worried about your data, there are many companies that run CD recycling programs. Some report that the two companies EcoGeek recommends have discontinuted their recycling services. We found several, including:

Plastic Recycling, Inc.
2015 South Pennsylvania Street
Indianapolis, IN 46225
(via Green Office)

Recycle for Breast Cancer also takes CDs (including broken ones), as well as a plethora of e-waste. And GreenDisk also recycles CDs for a fee.

If all else fails, you can always re-purpose your CDs and sell your craft project on Etsy. Perhaps the best advice from EcoGeek, is to avoid using media entirely. Don't write everything to CD, unless it is imperative that you have a backup copy.

I'm reusing some this summer as a mobile/scarecrow. Hanging over my plants, they keep the birds away from ripening tomatoes.

For those in the San Francisco Bay Area, Green Citizen is a great option.
